Why Is My Serger Making a Grinding Noise? Causes and Solutions

A grinding noise coming from your serger is never a good sign. Sewing machines should hum — sergers are a little louder than sewing machines, but a grinding sound means metal is rubbing against metal somewhere it shouldn't be. Here is how to figure out what is wrong and whether you need to bring it in.

Step One: Stop and Inspect

The moment you hear grinding, stop sewing. Running the machine with a grinding noise can turn a small problem into an expensive repair. Then, work through this diagnostic checklist:

• Remove all thread and the needle plate — look for stray bits of broken needle, pin fragments, or compacted lint
• Turn the handwheel by hand — can you feel a rough spot in the rotation? Where in the cycle does it happen?
• Check for thread wrapped around internal shafts — thread can wind around the main shaft or looper shafts and create a grinding sensation
• Inspect the knife area — a loose knife screw or a knife rubbing against the throat plate will grind

The Most Common Sources of Grinding Noises

Bearings and Bushings

This is the number one cause of grinding in sergers that are more than a few years old. The main shaft, looper shafts, and feed mechanism all ride on bearings or bushings. When the lubricant dries out, the metal surfaces start to wear. The sound is a low, mechanical grinding that gets worse at higher speeds. For most machines, this means a bearing replacement — a job for a technician who has the right press tools.

Gear Train Problems

Sergers use a combination of metal and plastic gears to transfer power from the motor to the various shafts. A chipped tooth on a gear makes a clicking-grinding hybrid sound that happens once per rotation. Plastic gears on older machines can become brittle and fracture. Metal gears can develop wear patterns if lubrication has been neglected.

Knife Mechanism Issues

The upper and lower knives on a serger slide against each other under spring tension. If the lower knife is adjusted too high, it will grind against the upper knife carrier. This produces a high-pitched metallic grind. A knife adjustment screw that has backed out can let the knife wobble and scrape against things it shouldn't touch.

Motor or Motor Mount Problems

If the grinding seems to come from the motor area rather than the sewing head, the motor mount bushings may be worn. The motor vibrates more than it should, and the vibration transfers through the machine as a grinding sensation. Less common, but worth checking.

What You Can Safely Do at Home

• Clean thoroughly — remove the needle plate, presser foot, and any accessible covers. Use a brush and compressed air to remove lint
• Oil all accessible points — consult your manual for oiling points. A single drop of sewing machine oil at each point can sometimes quiet a bearing that is just dry, not worn
• Check and tighten visible screws — knife screws, needle set screws, and presser foot screws can all loosen over time
• Inspect the handwheel — make sure it isn't rubbing against the machine body

When to Stop and Bring It In

Stop and bring the machine to a professional if:

• The grinding continues after thorough cleaning and oiling
• You can feel a distinct rough spot when turning the handwheel
• The noise is getting louder over time
• You see metal shavings or glittery residue in the oil pan
• The machine vibrates excessively alongside the noise
