FAQ

Real answers from Edward.

No jargon, no runaround — just honest help for Houston sewists.

Do you repair regular sewing machines or only sergers?

I repair both sergers and standard sewing machines. I work on all major brands including Brother, Juki, Janome, Babylock, Singer, Bernina, and Pfaff. Whether you need serger timing, tension adjustment, or general sewing machine maintenance, I can help.

What types of sewing machines and sergers do you repair?

I service all major sewing machine and serger brands including Singer, EuroPro, Brother, Janome, Juki, Babylock, Bernina, Pfaff, and many more. I work on both home and industrial models.

How long does a typical repair take?

Most repairs are completed within 1 week or less. Complex issues may take additional time, but I'll always provide an estimated timeline with your quote. I take pride in fast turnaround without sacrificing quality.

Do I need an appointment to drop off my machine?

Yes, I operate by appointment only. This ensures I can give your equipment my full, dedicated attention. You can schedule by calling (888) 874-4988 or using the photo upload form to request a quote and appointment.

How much does sewing machine repair cost in Houston?

My repair pricing starts at $99 for cleaning and maintenance, $119 for serger timing, $139 for tension and mechanical repair (tension problems, jamming, uneven seams), and $199 for the Full Service Package (timing + deep cleaning + inspection — a $19 savings vs buying them separately). There is a $50 diagnostic fee when you drop off your machine, which is applied toward your repair. Most common repairs fall in the $99–$199 range. All quotes are provided upfront before work begins.

What areas of Houston do you serve?

I am based at 101 North Loop West, Houston, TX 77008, and we serve the entire Houston metro area including The Heights, Montrose, Downtown, Galleria, Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, and surrounding communities.

Can you provide a quote without seeing my machine?

To provide the most accurate quote, I ask that you upload at least 3 photos of your machine from different angles. This helps me assess the issue and give you a fair, transparent price before you bring it in.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, credit/debit cards, and digital payment methods. Payment is due at the time of pickup unless other arrangements have been made.

Do you offer any warranty on your repairs?

All repairs include a warranty on parts and labor. Warranty terms vary by service type — typically 90 days for most repairs. I'll communicate the specific warranty for your repair at the time of service. If any issue arises related to the repair I performed, I'll fix it. I stand behind my work and want you to be completely satisfied with your machine's performance.

What is sewing machine timing and how do I know if mine is off?

Timing refers to the precise synchronization of the moving parts inside your machine — on a serger, the upper and lower loopers with the needles; on a standard sewing machine, the needle and hook assembly. When timing is off, you may notice skipped stitches, thread breaking, unusual noise, or the machine not forming stitches at all. Timing typically drifts over time with regular use and should be checked annually. My timing service starts at $119.

Is there a diagnostic fee?

Yes — I charge a $50 diagnostic fee when you drop off your machine. This fee is applied toward your repair if you choose to proceed, so it's not an extra cost. I keep the fee low so it's accessible to everyone while ensuring I dedicate my full time and expertise to customers who are serious about getting their machine fixed. Upload photos of your machine first and I'll provide a detailed quote before any work begins.

How do I prepare my machine for drop-off?

Bring your machine, power cord, foot pedal, and any accessories you normally use. If you have specific thread or fabric that was giving you trouble, bring those too so I can test with your actual materials. Remove any personal items from the carrying case. A list of specific issues you've noticed helps me diagnose faster.

Do you offer pickup and delivery?

Currently I operate by appointment at the shop at 101 North Loop West, Houston TX 77008. Drop off your machine during your scheduled appointment. We serve customers throughout the Houston metro including The Heights, Montrose, Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, and all surrounding areas.

Can I learn to maintain my machine myself?

Absolutely — and I encourage it! Basic maintenance like cleaning out lint, changing needles regularly, and knowing when your machine needs professional service can save you time and money. When you bring your machine in, I am happy to show you what I am doing and share tips for keeping it running well between services. I also share maintenance tips and tutorials in my newsletter — sign up at the bottom of any page to join the Houston sewing community.

Do you have a newsletter or sewing community?

Yes! I am building a community of Houston sewists — not just a repair shop. My newsletter goes out monthly with maintenance tips, project inspiration, answers to common sewing machine problems, and exclusive offers. It is free, it is not spammy, and you can unsubscribe anytime. Sign up in the footer of any page on the site. I also share behind-the-scenes repair work and sewing tips on Facebook and Instagram — follow us at @houstonsewingrepair.

How do I know if my machine needs professional service or if I can fix it myself?

A good rule of thumb: if cleaning out lint, changing the needle, and rethreading does not solve the problem, it is time for professional help. Skipped stitches, grinding noises, thread nests underneath your fabric, or tension that will not stay set are all signs something mechanical needs attention. When in doubt, upload a photo and tell me what you are seeing — I will give you my honest assessment. Sometimes it is a quick fix you can do at home, and I will tell you that. I would rather earn your trust than sell you a repair you do not need.
