5 Common Serger Mistakes That Lead to Costly Repairs

In our Houston repair shop, we see the same serger mistakes over and over. They come from every skill level — beginners and experienced sewists alike — and they're almost always preventable. Here are the five most common ones, what they do to your machine, and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Threading With the Tension Disks Engaged

This is the single most common mistake we see. When the presser foot is down, the tension disks are closed. If you thread with the foot down, the thread sits on top of the disk instead of between the disks — and your tension is essentially zero on that path.

Always thread with the presser foot up. The foot lever opens the tension disks. When you lower the foot to sew, the disks close around the thread. It is a simple habit that prevents hours of frustration.

Mistake 2: Changing Only One Needle

Serger needles work as a pair. When the left needle gets dull, the right needle isn't far behind. But many sewists change only the needle that broke or the one they think is the problem. A mismatched needle pair — one sharp, one dull — creates uneven stitch formation and puts extra stress on the sharp needle.

Change both needles at the same time, every time. Needles are cheap compared to timing adjustments.

Mistake 3: Using the Wrong Thread

Not all thread is created equal, and sergers are pickier than sewing machines about thread quality. Cheap serger thread from bulk spools is often inconsistent in diameter, which creates tension variation. Old thread gets brittle. Textured or fuzzy threads shed fibers that clog the tension disks and the air system on Babylock machines.

Invest in quality thread. Gutermann, Mettler, and Maxi-Lock are reliable. Store thread out of direct sunlight. And if a spool has been sitting in your sewing room since the Clinton administration, replace it.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Small Noises

Sergers aren't silent, but they should sound consistent. A new rattle, clicking, or grinding noise is the machine telling you something is wrong. The most expensive repairs we do are the ones where the customer says, "It was making that noise for a few months, but I just kept sewing."

When the sound changes, stop. Bring it in for a diagnostic. A bearing replaced early is a $75 repair. A bearing that fails and scores the shaft it rides on can turn into a $300 repair.

Mistake 5: Skipping Annual Service

The most preventable mistake on this list. Annual professional service catches wear before it becomes failure. It isn't a sales pitch — it's the same logic as changing the oil in your car. You can skip it for a while, but eventually, you will pay for it.

Common things caught at annual service that would have been expensive if ignored:

• Partially stripped gear teeth
• Dried-out bearings
• Knife blades worn past safe limits
• Looper points developing burrs
• Tension disks with wear grooves

Each of those is a $10-30 fix during a service visit, or a $100+ repair if it fails mid-project.
